2020 – Houghton Lake Public Library Awarded Grant for STEAM Kits

Library of Things: STEAM Kits Project

The Roscommon County Community Foundation is proud to announce that $1,300.00 has been awarded to the Houghton Lake Public Library to assist with the Library of Things: STEAM Kits Project. Funding for the project was provided by the Alexa Luck Memorial Fund and the Roscommon County Kellogg Youth Fund.

A Michigan “Kids Count” report from 2019 found that in Roscommon County 71.8% of third graders are not proficient in language arts and that 78.2% of eighth-graders are not proficient in math. The purpose of the STEAM Kits is to address these issues by providing access to materials that can help a child’s education in a fun and creative way. By providing kits for children pre-K to 8, they will hopefully prevent local children from falling behind in school at a young age.

Unfortunately at this time due to the Corona-virus, the library has stated that they are not allowing the kits to go out due to concerns about being able to properly sanitize them in between use, but are hoping the kits will be able to go out in the near future. For more information on the kits, please contact Houghton Lake Public Library.

The Roscommon County Community Foundation (RCCF) recently awarded a 400.00 grant to the Roscommon Area District Library (RADL) for a live performance by The Moxie Strings. Funding for this project was provided by the Alexa A. Luck Memorial Fund.

The Moxie Strings visited RADL on the evening of July 31st, 2018 and performed a live one hour program. The musical celebration brought together community members of all ages. According to Colleen Dyke Library Director, “We were ecstatic to have the Moxie Strings back to our library. We always enjoy their music, and our patron turnout was outstanding with 117 in attendance.”

During the performance, Alison Lynn played an electric cello and Diana Ladio played a 5-string violin. “The Moxie Strings compose the majority of their pieces and arrange melodies from many countries, resulting in a genre-blurring blend of ear-catching, mainstream melodies and foot-stomping, rock-influenced rhythms. The band’s polished, high-energy show continues to redefine strings’ role in contemporary music, and offers audience members a diverse, fun, musical experience.”

Buttons can contain pictures, text, photographs or any one of the over 11,000+ SymbolStix communication symbols included with this app.

2016 – Houghton Lake Community Schools Receive Grant Funding From RCCF – Collins Elementary Lexia Lab

Thirty students from Collins Elementary School were given the opportunity to work with a special reading program, thanks to a grant from the Roscommon County Community Foundation. Funding was awarded from the Houghton Lake Educational Foundation Fund ($700), and the Alexa A. Luck Memorial Fund ($500).

The Lexia Reading Lab is a licensed program that is used to “increase phonics capabilities and increase reading comprehension,” according to Jan Morganstern, teacher at Collins Elementary. “Each student is able to work at their own level and at their own pace on the specific reading skills that they lack.”

RCCF provided funding to purchase thirty licenses for students in the third and fourth grades at Houghton Lake Schools. Students began using the program in early March and have been enjoying it immensely. “It is challenging, but it is fun and I know I am learning,” Lexia Lab student, Cam’ren Brown told RCCF Executive Director, Suzanne Luck. Programming will continue in the 2016-17 school year.
