The Roscommon County Community Foundation recently award a $2,500.00 grant to the Friends of Trestle Park. The Wade Family Donor Advised Fund ($1,000.00) and the Morley Foundation Fund ($1,500.00) awarded the funds to support this grant.

This grant supported the seventh season of free concerts series at Denton Township’s Trestle Park helping them pay performers, purchase supplies and promotional materials. They were able to put on a full summer of musical events which included concerts the third Thursday of the month, open mic concerts the second Saturday of the month and a very successful bonus concert. According to Mary Michela, The Friends of Trestle Park intend to bring music and family friendly events to the Houghton Lake/Roscommon County Area through their summer concert series.

The Roscommon County Community Foundation (RCCF) is pleased to announce COOR ISD was awarded a $1,474.00 grant. Funding for this grant was provided by the Wade Family Donor Advised Fund.

Funding provided COOR ISD with the Read It Once Again curriculum that is especially designed for children with language delays. The ultimate goal of the Read It Once Again curriculum is to enable those with cognitive impairments and autism to improve their reading skills. According to teacher Kristin Eagle, “Students have completed the first book, “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” and were able to take a copy home to read with their families!” Students were able to use their TalkTablets in part with the Read It Once Again Curriculum, which were provided by a previous grant through the Community Foundation.

The Roscommon County Community Foundation (RCCF) is pleased to announce that they recently presented a $500.00 grant to the Roscommon Middle School (RMS). The funding for this project comes from the Wade Family Donor Advised Fund.

The middle school playground had limited equipment not allowing all of the children to be involved during recess. With the awarded funds RMS was able to purchase sporting equipment to play basketball, soccer, flag football, kickball, jump rope, hula hoop, and skip it games as well as paint for the lines of these games. A goal of this project was to allow the kids to work together becoming more of a team. Students were presented with a problem and were encouraged to come up with a solution to solve it. They were eager to help with the grant process and anxiously waited to hear if they had been awarded the funds needed to purchase the new equipment. 4th grade student Joey Abbe said, “You helped change Roscommon Middle School and kids hopes.”

2016 – RADL Virtual Reality by the Resorter

Escaping into a virtual world right in Roscommon County is now possible, since the Roscommon Area District Library obtained two virtual reality headsets.

RADL Library Director Casey Adams said a $2,000 grant from the Roscommon County Community Foundation’s Wade Family Donor Advised Fund made the purchase of the Oculus Rift units possible.

Adams said the units have educational and entertainment value.

Once the wearer places the goggles and headphones of the Oculus Rift unit on, any number of programs may be accessed, from views inside the human body, to 3D videos to Hulu TV shows and movies.

A tutorial features virtual views of a forest landscape, a view from tall city buildings and a dinosaur that gets what appears to be quite up close to the viewer. By turning one’s head, extended views of scenes may be seen.

RCCF Executive Director Suzanne E. Luck said she got slightly motion sick while using the device.

“This is really cool technology,” she said. “It’s just another great program the library is able to provide.”

Adams said it is a pilot program for other libraries in the county.

“The goal is for other libraries to have it,” he said.

Adams added that comfort levels may be chosen to minimize motion sickness.

The library also has two Google Cardboard units. Scenes may be viewed by placing a smartphone inside the fold – although it might be wise to view the roller coaster scene while sitting down!
