With over a century of service in northern Michigan, Steuernol & McLaren Funeral Homes has deep roots in the communities it serves. Founded in 1910 by brothers Elmer and Kazimer Steuernol, the original business began as a combination furniture and undertaking service in downtown West Branch. As the business grew, the furniture operations were sold, and the funeral home moved to its current location in West Branch. Over the years, additional homes were established in Roscommon (1952), Rose City (1965), and Prudenville (1970), expanding the reach and impact of the Steuernol legacy.
In 1984, Terry R. McLaren and H. Michael Axford purchased Steuernol Funeral Home, Inc., and by 1990, Terry McLaren became the sole owner, renaming the business Steuernol & McLaren Funeral Homes, Inc. Continued growth led to the establishment of the St. Helen location in 2002. A decade later, in 2012, the funeral homes were purchased by Philip W. Stephens and Rayme R. LaBean, who remain committed to the same values of compassion, service, and community involvement that have defined the business for generations.
Serving families across an approximately 60-square-mile region, Steuernol & McLaren Funeral Homes is proud to be one of the largest funeral service providers in northern Michigan. In honor of this long-standing commitment to the region, the Steuernol & McLaren Funeral Homes Scholarship was established to support local students in their pursuit of higher education. The scholarship is awarded annually to a graduating senior at Roscommon High School who is a resident of St. Helen and plans to attend an accredited college, university, trade, or vocational school.
This scholarship reflects Steuernol & McLaren’s ongoing dedication to supporting the next generation and investing in the future of the communities it serves.
