Michelle Kline, of Blue Skies Counseling Network, spoke with students from the Roscommon County Community Foundation’s Youth Advisory Council (YAC) at their March meeting. The topic of the presentation was suicide prevention and mental health awareness. Students learned statistics, as well as warning signs of mental health issues and self harming behavior. Kline spoke to students about what they can do to help others, and how to seek help for themselves.
Blake Erickson, a senior YAC member of RHS, thought the presentation was worthwhile. “The information provided about teen deaths was relevant, and I learned a lot,” he states. Other students who were surveyed agree that the material matters in our community, and that awareness should be heightened.
Each month, different topics, such as sobriety, suicide awareness, and youth philanthropy are presented. If you are an 8th-12th grade student at any of the 5 schools in Roscommon County and are interested in joining YAC, or would like to attend one of these meetings, speak with your school’s YAC advisor.
