Richard Lynn Johoske was born in Ohio in 1933. He attended the University of Cincinnati and graduated from Bowling Green State University with a bachelor of science degree in education. He served in the U.S. Army for two years, reaching the rank of first lieutenant. He also attended Central Michigan University to work on his master’s degree.
Richard started his teaching career in 1959 at Arcadia Schools in Ohio. After five years there, he moved to Roscommon where he taught physical education and physical science at Roscommon Middle School from 1964 to 1993. Here he was nicknamed “Coach”,“Pops” or “Mr. J” and coached football, basketball and baseball. “Pops’” life was directed by three “holy trinities:” football, basketball and baseball; fishing, hunting and camping; and the veterans A.H. table, the Moose and his family. His favorite words were “Go Bucks.”
The Mr. J’s Buckeye Nuts College Scholarship Fund is used to provide scholarship assistance to one or more graduates of Roscommon High School who is a sophomore, junior or senior attending an accredited college, university, trade or vocational school. Strong consideration given to students who will attend Ohio State University, Bowling Green State University, Central Michigan University, the University of Cincinnati, Michigan State University or the University of Michigan.
