Calvin Hissong, 36
Teacher and Coach at Houghton Lake Community Schools
Calvin Hissong has deep roots in the Houghton Lake community, where his grandparents settled in the 1960s. Growing up, Houghton Lake was a beloved family destination, and his relatives have been active contributors to the community as teachers, business owners, and leaders. Calvin has proudly called Houghton Lake his home for the past ten years, working at Spicer’s Boat City, Camping World, and currently Houghton Lake Community Schools. He also serves on the RCCF board of trustees.
When schools were shut down during the COVID-19 pandemic, Calvin recognized the needs of his students and took it upon himself to raise money for them. His initiative quickly gained traction, inspiring others in the community to join in. The funds raised were used to provide food, hygiene products, activities, and essential items for the students, ensuring they were supported during a challenging time.
As an elementary teacher and varsity basketball coach, along with being the varsity football assistant coach, Calvin is passionate about encouraging youth to give their best effort and adopt a growth mindset. He finds fulfillment in helping others understand the importance of “failing forward” and learning how to handle adversity.
Calvin is supporting the Houghton Lake Sports Booster Scholarship Fund at RCCF.
